Qore To Be Free For PlayStation Plus Subscribes Starting With Issue 26

By July 11, 2010

Follow me on:

Qore is a funny feature. The concept is clever, essentially it's an Official PlayStation interactive magazine. The monthly download features previews, interviewers, commentary and exclusive video clips. Qore also, depending on the month, comes with fun, free DLC, such as the full version of "High Velocity Bowling" or PS3 themes and other goodies.

At the same time it, like so many other digital magazines (Wired, I'm looking at you) cost much more than getting a print rad delivered to your home. Core cost $2.99 an episode or $24.99 a year. PlayStation: The Official Magazine, on the other hand, costs $18 (sometimes less) annually or $5.99 an issue.

Now, it appears Qore will be included as a part of the PlayStation plus subscription service.  While no announcement has been made by Sony, issue 26: July is available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers, and two statements have been made on the Official PlayStation Blog.

First, there was a comment made by Kevin Furuichi, of the PlayStation Network, stating, "Each month's single episode of Qore will be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers starting tomorrow when Qore - Episode 26 becomes available."

While this is a statement made by a Sony employee, it is just a comment in a blog post, leaving much to speculation. However another statement was made elsewhere on the official PlayStation Blog, under weekly the recap on July 10th:

Qore Episode 26: Killzone 3, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, & PlayStation Move - Fresh details on some big upcoming games, plus a free PS3 theme. Protip: Now free for PlayStation Plus subscribers!

Given the two posts, I think it's safe to say that Qore is being made available as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription service. It makes good sense, but opens up a number of questions.

  • What happens to people who have paid for subscriptions to Qore and PlayStation Plus, will they see a refund or perhaps have their service extended?
  • Will PlayStation Plus members get the Qore bonus content, or just the video magazine?
  • Is this just for episode 26, or is Qore to be a permanent part of the PlayStation Plus service?

Only time will tell, hopefully Sony will issue an announcement clarifying the relationship between Qore and PlayStation Plus.
