20 GB PS3 R.I.P.?
Joystiq called the Sony Style store and was told that "we haven't had it in stock for a month ... We're not getting any more. You could maybe go out and find one."
Let me be among the first to proclaim the 20 gig PS3 officially dead. When Best Buy stopped selling them it was one thing, but when Sony stops carrying them in their stores? I think that's pretty much the nail in the coffin.
I say good riddance, this multiple-tiered system for consoles confused consumers and really did them no favor.

I first commented on this almost a month ago on my gaming blog, Fuel the Rebellion. I think gamers realized from the beginning that 20gig wasn’t going to cover their needs. Wonder why Sony was so short-sighted?

Sorry for the duplication, for some reason these aren’t showing up on my blog! I first commented on this almost a month ago on my gaming blog, Fuel the Rebellion. I think gamers realized from the beginning that 20gig wasn’t going to cover their needs. Wonder why Sony was so short-sighted?
I always thought it was dumb to copy the multiple SKU model. Users who shell out their hard earned money should be treated equally instead of being cajoled into greedy marketing scheme.
Whether or not they drop the 20 gig model or come out with a new “larger model” is a moot argument at this point. The ones that have bought into the PS3; whether 20 or 60 gig, can easily change out their HDD with larger ones, so it doesn’t matter if they drop the smaller of the two sku’s. Because the people that buy the PS3 are going to go for the one with all the “bells and whistles” on it much the same as with the 360, people much rather preferred the elite over the cheaper version.
Remember, it was more than just a HD size difference. The 60 gig PS3 has WiFi, flash media slots, and a chrome strip.
I have the 20gb PS3 myself, but I don’t consider myself as needed all of the bells and whisles anyway, so to me a savings of $100 was ok to me. I think many casual gamers may also feel the same way. Now, people do not have a cheaper alternative, they have to pay $600. Maybe a price drop should be coming soon, because I see the price as a reason a lot of other people have not got one yet. Now, it will be worse for them.
