PS2 outsells Xbox 360 - not a good sign for team Microsoft

As we head into the summer gaming slump in which you, the gaming public, decide to actually open the door and see what's out there, let's take a look at how videogame hardware has been selling. I was shocked by them numbers, and think you may be too.
May's US numbers worked out as follows:
- PS2: 232,000 units sold
- Xbox 360: 221,000
- PSP: 159,659
- DS: 145,930
- GCN: 33,000
- Xbox: 26,000
- DS Lite: 698,112 (that's a TON of gaming machines!)
- PSP: 116,575
- PS2 93,599
- DS: 48,889
- Xbox 360: 6,109 (ouch)
- GCN: 4,696
- Xbox: 108
Scarier yet are the Japanese numbers. If the Xbox 360 can't get a foothold in Japan, there's no way they will ever unseat Sony from the king of the console throne. Even if the Xbox 360 can manage to eek by the PS3 in the US, Asia is half of the gaming market, and Microsoft has practically zero presence there.
So Sony, you're in a good place. Do us all a favor, and don't drop the ball this November by not having enough units available, please.

comparing the sales of a $400 console to a $150 is stupid. but not surprised you did it. what’s really gonna be sad is watching the ps2 outsell the ps3 as well… i guess that would spell bad news for sony, too…
This is my stupid item of the day. You are comparing apples and oranges. Comparing the number of systems sold is ridiculous. The next best thing would be looking at the actual sales in dollars, but then you have the problem of figuring how much profit/loss is involved in the sale of each system.
Anyhoo a PS2 costs $130.00 and an XBox360 costs $300-$400. Using your own argument and numbers for the US the PS2 had $30,160,000 in sales and Xbox 360 (assuming that every one was a cheaper CORE $300 system) had $66,300,000 in sales (that’s almost over double the Sony PS2’s sales!) Now add that some percentage where $400 systems and the Microsoft money only goes higher)
But now I’m sales of comparing a more advanced system to a less advanced system, but you started first…
I have to say I’m amazed at the MS fanboy base. Regardless what the numbers are MS is the best possible choice availalbe. I think the numbers represent a good reflection of the public in saying that the PS2 just has more to offer than the 360. This is from good games to a much wider audience. Seriously, consider I have a 360 and a PS2 and I spent most of my weekend playing on my PS2 because of the greater quality of game play and experience availalbe for the PS2. MS regarldess of all their fanfare does not have the breadth of games for the masses yet. And yes, I am in cluding the original Xbox titles that are some-what backwards compatible.
The xbox 360 has been selling out ps2 in the US, this is the first month that it was outsould by the ps2, but that dose not even matter. The ps2 cost 150 its cheep and yes there is a plethora of games for it because its been out since 2000. And the 360 hasn’t seen any super must have only for xbox tiltles yet but its still doing good. what i believe is going to happen , (just a prediction) is that xbox wont win japan but thanks to the 200 wii sony wont ether. But in the US things will be a bit different in a place that loves games like halo gta its going to be close between sony and microsoft. but whats the only sytem you can play gta4 halo 3 and gears of war, and dont be suprized if rare got something brewing up besides that kids game viva pinata. only time will tell, im an xbox fan but i cant make the 360 win, idk who will but these sales numbers have nothing to do with the results
A quick question:
Sony had sold more than 100 million PS2 systems as of November last year. What was the largest volume of any single software title?
From what I can see, no game title has ever sold over 5 million units – With an apparent base of 100 million users – it does not sound right.
All the info I’ve seen must be wrong – surely there are a few games that everyone tends to buy (Tekken 4, 5, Tag, Gran Turismo 3, 4) So the unit sales of these titles should be more like 50, or 60 million at least… The numbers just don’t sound right. Anyone know the answer?
Anyway, I am on to my second PS2 console and I think the DVD is on it’s last legs (grinding tray sound, and slow load times) – so I’ll be popping off to buy my third and this time, last Playstation.
How is the 360, “not outselling the ps2, much less the ps3″, It is outslelling the ps3, because the ps3 hasn’t sold ANY units yet.
if you weren’t such an idiot, you’d realize the 360 is selling faster right now than the ps2 was in the us at this point after it launched, so interpreting the fact that a $130 console with thousands of games is currently moving more units than a $400 console with 40 odd games is shortsighted, dumb, and altogether incorrect.

Playstation – WTF are you talking about?, the PS2 launched in 2000.
why are you comparing numbers a year and a half after launch of the ps2, to 6 months after the launch of 360? the ps2 shipped a lot less than 500k in may of 2001, I knew people who were still looking for one.
Thank you for pointing out my error. Yes, the PS2 launched October 26, 2000. I mistakenly put the May of 2002 info instead of 2001. Unfortunately, November 2001 is the earliest month-by-month I can find. But it is still true that the PS2 far outsold the Xbox 360 in the first months and year. The PS2 sold 6,400,000 in 2000 alone. The Xbox 360 has yet to sell that many thus far. Heck, in the U.S. the Xbox 360 has only outsold the PS2 in one month, April 2006. To be frank, I am done with this thread, though y’all can continue debating. The impact on the market is up for speculation, but the PS2 sold much faster at launch than the Xbox 360, and it is currently outselling the Xbox 360. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to agree that it’d be better for Microsoft to outsell a last generation system. The bigger question is, why are people so offended by the idea that Sony hold a larger market presence than Microsoft?
