The Bottom Line
Pros
- Riddick is one of the best looking console games - ever
- Amazing blend of stealth and first person shooter action
- Original story and extras tie in well with the Riddick movies
Cons
- No multiplayer
Description
- Graphics: 5+ If I gave score higher than 5, this would be the only game to get it. HDTV supported.
- Sound: 4 The ambient sounds are great, and the music is usually fitting, though a bit cinematic.
- Concept: 3.5 Not a new idea, but few have done it this well. Riddick is excellence in execution.
- Control: 4 Standard first person shooter layout, works surprisingly well in hand to hand combat.
- Replay: 3 Depends, some will want to play it again for the collectibles, some won't.
- Difficulty: 3.5 Features some clever situations, but you shouldn't get 'stuck' anywhere.
- All scores are out of 5. The overall rating is not an average of the above scores.
- ESRB Rating: Mature - Blood, Intense Violence, Strong Language. Not a game for young players.
Guide Review - The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay Video Game - Xbox
The Riddick game takes place before Pitch Black or the new Chronicles of Riddick movie. You are taken to a prison, and you have to escape. While there you actually get the infamous 'eyeshine' and learn quite a bit about the mysterious mister Riddick. Aside from developing the story, the game features tons of stills and movie clips from the film which you find hidden throughout the game in the forms of packs of cigarettes. I can here the anti-smoking propaganda machine warming up.
Of course gameplay is where this game really shines. You spend a surprisingly long time without guns, odd for a first person shooter. So you have to sneak and fight with fists, clubs, shivs and whatever else you can pick up. Go on mini-missions for other inmates and you get beefier weapons. The story is linear, but features tons of side paths, that are certainly worth taking. In the end Riddick features amazing visuals, surprisingly fun stealth / hand to hand action (yes you get guns as well), and a compelling story. The only flaws are it is a bit short - I'd give it 14 hours, and there is no multiplayer. But honestly, Riddick is the best single player experience on the Xbox, bar none.
