Mayor Bloomberg vs. Marc Ecko

Wednesday August 24, 2005
Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is an upcoming console title that bring urban culture and graffiti art to the PS2 and other systems. Unfortunately, not everyone sees graffiti the same way as Marc Ecko. In fact, Mayor Bloomberg defend New York City in pulling a permit that would have allowed Ecko to hold a large event celebrating and demonstrating street art and graffiti. The city revoked the permit citing that the activity encouraged crime. Imagine if New York decided to ban any videogame, movie, song or book that featured or 'encouraged' crime. Ecko and co. are suing, as well they should. This is a clear case of discrimination against a style of art. Whether they like it or not, the 1st Amendment requires that speech laws be 'content neutral' (sorry, the media law teacher in me just reared his ugly head). Anyway, please read Ecko's open letter on the topic, and show your support for artistic freedom. No one is saying you should be a vandal, but that's not the issue here. Don't let reactionary politics silence the art of our generation.
