Price Cuts Make Consoles Sales Go Tops Turvy in Japan: PS3 Sales Up 700%
Enterbrain, publisher of Japanese gaming mega-mag Famistsu has a rundown on how each cut has affected each platform.
When the PS3 was was discounted ¥10,000 to a new price of ¥29,980 on September 3rd sales went up 700%.
The PSP-3000 was reduced from ¥19,800 to ¥16,800. The approx $30 price cut led to 126% more PSP's being sold.
When the Wii was cut from ¥25,000 to ¥20,000 Nintendo saw sales jump by 29%.
On the opposite side of the coin, Microsoft slashed the prices of the Xbox 360 Elite from ¥39,800 to ¥29,800. After a slight initial jump, Microsoft actually saw sales drop 70% in Japan.
One theory for the jump is that the PS3 has Final Fantasy XIII right around the corner and the Wii has the New Super Mario Bros. driving its end of year sales. Great games and lower prices? How could sales not be good?
