MORTAL KOMBAT: KOLLECTION, Coming Soon to a PS2 Near You

Monday July 28, 2008
As long as they are competitively priced, I quite like collections. I know, some are upset when companies reissue old games, but games simply aren't like DVDs or books. You rarely see additionally pressings of games that are not major hits. Barnes and Noble can track down a shockingly diverse selection of books, but try to get GameStop to find you something as simple as Marvel vs. Capcom... good luck.

So Midway has decided to reissue a Mortal Kombat three-pack called "MORTAL KOMBAT: KOLLECTION." It will include only three games: Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.

Perhaps these are fan favorites, in which case you could call the bundle, Mortal Kombat for Kool Kids, but I'm a little surprised they have decided not to issue the Komplete Mortal Kombat Kollection... I know they are trying to build hype for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but really, would it have killed Midway to throw in the older 2D games? Personally, I'd love to have the entire Mortal Kombat series on my shelf.

I guess if you missed any of the recent games, it is a good package at a fair price ($29.99). Look for it in September.

How Right you are. Packing up the 2D games would have been a nice gesture and a beating argument for the die-hard MK fans (and wouldn’t have cost Midway anything more than a penny, since MK1-3 have already been converted to PS2/XBOX for the Midway arcade collections). Since MK’s departure from 2D, the games have only been fairly mediocre anyway (well, Shaolin Monks was a really nice one), they lost most of their edge. for me, this package doesn’t even sound halfway interesting, and I guess many an oldschool MK-die-harder feels the same.

By the way, when you wrote “So Midway has divided[…]”, did you perhaps mean decided? I don’t get the meaning of this as it is written by now…

Hey, thanks for catching that… ’tis the problem with hastily using a spell checker.

Cheers,
