Movies Cause Murder!?!

Thursday October 11, 2007
Of course they don't. But when I read the sensational headline, "Ex-stripper accused in plot similar to ’94 movie" with the sub-headline, "Prosecutors: Woman fond of ‘Last Seduction’ follows script to deadly end" I had to laugh out loud.

Don't get me wrong, I am as opposed to murderous strippers as the next person, but my thoughts, as usual, instantly went to videogames. If you changed the word "movie" to "videogame" in the title, and "Last Seduction" to "Bloodrayne" or "Indigo Prophecy" you not only would have a very different story, but I am sure a different response.

In the next few weeks you will not see debates about violence in movies in the media. Nor will you see politicians crying out for laws banning the sale of violent movies to minors. Nor should you.

But if it had been a videogame, instead of a cheesy movie. You would have. And that made me laugh.
