PS3 in Last Place?

Sunday May 20, 2007
The sky is not falling, I repeat the sky is not falling. NPD has released figures showing where each of the modern consoles was in terms of sales at six months after initial release. They are as follows:
  1. Wii = 2,470,000
  2. PS2 = 2,200,000
  3. Xbox = 1,900,000
  4. GameCube = 1,540,000
  5. Xbox 360 = 1,384,000
  6. PS3 = 1,271,000
Yes, out of all the systems listed, at six months after launch the PS3 has sold less than any competing system. Let's remember a few things, while the Xbox and PS2 were neck and neck at 6 mos. the PS2 decimated it in the end. Heck, they are selling more PS2's in Japan than PS3's currently.

Additionally these are North American numbers, remember that the PS3 dominates the Xbox 360 in Japan. Finally, 6 mos. is not the end-game. The PS2 is going strong, getting great titles like Odin Sphere and God of War II, the Xbox is officially no longer supported by Microsoft.

Can the PS3 pull ahead and become the king of next-gen consoles? Sure, but as the numbers indicate, it's an uphill battle.

PS3 = 1,271,000

Hmmm… It would appear that there are not many units seperating the 360 and the PS3 considering the difference in costs of the two consoles. The 360 has had a big jump time wise on the PS3, and many more titles to support the gamers with.

My predicition is that as the new titles are released for the PS3 we will see it surpass the 360. After PS3 home is out of beta and fully up, the PS3 will climb like nothing we have seen in the industry thus far. home is what second life does not have the power to be, and what myspace needs to be. Wii will always be strong because of the types of games that families play together.

I do feel Sony is smart not to cut off the PS2. Let the market put that legendary device to rest.
