Sony predicts 887 million dollar loss on game division, blames PS3
Monday May 1, 2006
100 billion yen, aka 887 million US dollars, aka 457 billion Chilean pesos is what Sony is predicting to lose this year on its game division, citing massive losses in attempting to ship the PS3 below cost for the 2006 holiday season. Think of it in terms of Wendy's chicken nuggets, of Alexis Bledel fame. We're talking about four and a half billion nuggets! Am I worried? Kinda. All consoles seem to sell at a loss, now, with the hopes of making up for the costs in software and accessories. But four and a half billion nuggets is a lot of chicken. However, remember that Microsoft has yet to turn a profit on the Xbox, and Sony's PlayStation line, despite consoles initially being sold at a loss, is one of the company's most profitable products.
