Despite looming PS3 release, PlayStation 2 tops Japan's hardware sales

The Sony PS2 has retaken the slot as top selling gaming hardware in Japan, from the Nintendo DS Lite. For a system that's facing a new version coming out, it's not small feat. Many feel that the release of Final Fantasy XII. While this is goon news for Sony, it's even better for gamers. Hardware sales were up an astonishing 48% this year in Nippon. And let's face it, a healthy Japanese videogame market is essential for maintaing the industry, not only in terms of development studios in the county, but also for foriegn companies who depend on strong Japanese sales. John, you have to read the date. On April 7th the stats were that the PS2 had bumped the Nintendo DS. Since then the DS has sold like hotcakes, so it is likely no longer true. But at the time, those were the charts. If you know otherwise I’m more than happy to correct it.
