PlayStation 3 (PS3) may be region-free

Totalvideogames.com has quoted the Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, Michael Ephraim, as saying, "If you look at the fact that it will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP (PlayStation Portable)." The idea of a a region free PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a dream come true for those who've longed to not only play games from other countries, but watch foreign produced films as well. Presently the PlayStation 2 (PS2) is region-encoded, meaning that games and films from some countries will not work on an unmodified PS2 from another. There are third-party kits which allow for region-free playing, but many void the PS2's warranty once installed.
